Senj - A million euros for the makeover of Nehaj

Nehaj
The town of Senj, the local City Museum, the Open University, the Tourist board and the Development agency recently presented a project which should enrich the tourist, cultural and historical heritage of the park that surrounds the ancient fortress of Nehaj, and offer visitors of the city new content. The project is funded by the European Union.

In the Nehaj Park, which occupies about 14 acres, the project plan is to restore and pave the trail, rebuild the collapsed stone walls along them, and introduce public lighting and video surveillance. There will be two children's playgrounds, the Kosturnica and Kalvarija monuments will be renovated, as will the park entrance and the surrounding environment, with new lighting set up around the fort Nehaj. In the fortress, which is every year visited by a growing number of tourists, there will be an info-post with information about the fort and the history of Senj.

The project should be completed by the end of January next year. It is worth about a million euro, of which 75 percent will be financed by the EU and the rest by the town of Senj, which will get recognizable tourist content. It is the Nehaj fortress, built in 1558, that is the symbol of the city, located in the Velebit channel. It was built of materials from destroyed churches, monasteries and houses originally located outside the city walls. It has a square shape and is orientated towards each side of the world. The top of the fort served as a lookout-viewpoint. It was from there that the vigilant guards watched the entrances to Senj from land and sea and received light and smoke signals from their fellow-workers from the islands and the coast. The top of the fortress offers a beautiful view of the Croatian coast and islands of Rab, Goli, Prvić, Cres, Krk and the mountains of Gorski Kotar, Velebit and Učka. The fortress Nehaj exhibits collections Senj`s Uskoks (local soldiers) and Senj Maritime Authorities as well as the exhibitions Senj Church Throughout History and the City of Senj Noble Crests. Senj is often mentioned by Greek and Roman geographers and historians and is marked on the Roman Tabula Peutingeriana as Por(tus) Senia. During the Roman rule it was part of the province of Illyria (Dalmatia of that time) as a major harbour city in the northern Adriatic. The town of Senj, the local City Museum, the Open University, the Tourist board and the Development agency recently presented a project which should enrich the tourist, cultural and historical heritage of the park that surrounds the ancient fortress of Nehaj, and offer visitors of the city new content.
